Running for Eugénie: A Journey of Hope and Humanity

Today, I want to share with you why I, Patrick Michel, have chosen to embark on a challenging 140-kilometer run from Tremblant to Montreal. This isn’t just a test of physical endurance; it’s a testament to the power of community and the unyielding strength of the human heart.
A Cause Close to the Heart
Two years ago, I ran from Montreal to Quebec City for a young boy named Malik Fontaine, who was battling leukemia. The joy of seeing Malik in remission today reminds me of the impact we can have when we come together for a cause. But as one chapter closes, another opens, and this time, it’s for Eugénie Miron.
Eugénie is a 51-year-old mother facing stage 4 breast cancer with metastases in her bones, lungs, liver, and heart. Her story is one of resilience and hope, beginning with the miracle of motherhood after seven in vitro fertilizations over four years. However, the very process that brought her the joy of her 11-year-old son may have contributed to her current battle.
The Fight for Life and Dignity
Eugénie’s struggle isn’t just against cancer; it’s against a healthcare system that seems to have lost sight of the individual behind the diagnosis. Faced with a stark choice between a standardized care protocol that offers little hope and an alternative treatment that could save her life, Eugénie and her family find themselves in an impossible situation.
The Quebec healthcare system’s refusal to explore alternative treatments has left Eugénie with a daunting task: raise $125,000 for private care or face an unthinkable alternative. This is where we come in. This is where we show that humanity still exists in a world that can sometimes seem cold and uncaring.
A Run for Hope
On September 28th and 29th, I will run from Tremblant to Montreal. Every step of this 140-kilometer journey will be a step towards hope. Every kilometer will be a message to Eugénie: “You are not alone. We are with you. We believe in your strength.”
